Referring to Myanmar, many people immediately think of hot, dry weather and plenty of Buddhist temples and pagodas but once you travel to Pyin Oo Lwin, you will have the completely different experiences. This destination owns unique features that could not find in any places in Myanmar.

Located on the Shan Plateau at an altitude of 1070 meters above sea level, the weather at Pyin Oo Lwin is always cool all year round. During the British colonial period, this was also the ideal place to build resorts to relax and avoid the heat of summer in Myanmar.

The town looks like a miniature English countryside with the buildings inspired by European architecture, old trees and colorful flowers. The cost of tourism services in here is quite cheap so the Pyin Oo Lwin really a perfect destination to visit while you are traveling Myanmar.

There are two main types of hotels in Pyin Oo Lwin at different prices. The newly built hotels offers the lowest price from 20-25 USD/night while the other is colonial buildings built in the early 20th century as a relaxation place of British colonial and now were renovated into hotels and resorts. The cheapest price if you want to stay in there ranges 50 – 70 USD up to several hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If you would like to both save money but still stay in the old building, let’s go out town center about 2km, Orchi Hotel NanMyaing is great suggestion for you.

Places to visit

The attractions in Pyin Oo Lwin is not only beautiful  but also located very close the town center so it is so easily to visit.

Governor’s House (via

Governor’s House: now is a luxury resort in Pyin Oo Lwin. Although its architecture was destroyed during the World War II, it has now been restored. Inside the mansion recreates the scene of the old government with wax figures of famous people. Entrance fee is 2 USD/person.

National Kandawgyi Garden: About 4km from the town center, this is a must-visit destination in Pyin Oo Lwin. Two of the best ways to get there are by bike and by horse-drawn carriage. With only $5 for entrance ticket, you can freely to explore the primary forest from 8am to 6pm. Spend at least 3 hours discovering all the lakes, wooden bridges, waterfalls, forest, orchid gardens, butterflies museum,… in here.

Chinese Pagoda: is also an interesting place to visit. The pagoda worships the Buddha and gods but its style is totally different from the pagodas of local people. You also can visit and stand at seven-storey tower in the pagoda to see the surrounding landscape.

Anisakahn Waterfall (via TourHQ)

Enjoy vegetarian buffet (Tian Ran Vegetarian): Buffet includes rice, soup, fried vegetables, served for lunch weekdays except Sunday.

Anisakahn Waterfall: If you love trekking and natural exploration, Anisakahn Waterfall nestled in the hills and lush jungle will not let you disappointed. You have to spend about 4 hours moving from the town to the waterfall and enjoying the amazing scenery. The best time to enjoy the beauty of this waterfall is in the morning or late afternoon.

Visiting farms: In Pyin Oo Lwin, you can visit strawberry gardens. The strawberry season is from December to April. The gardeners are very hospitable and welcome tourist come to visit and buy strawberry. Another farm you can go is December Farm which is the place providing milk and yogurt to Pyin Oo Lwin.

Pyin OoKhu – the center of the town is the main shopping site in here with many shops. Right near the Purcell Clock Tower is the central market which offers a variety of products from fruits, vegetables to local specialties. Strawberry jam, fruit jam and fruit wine are the most famous specialties in here.
